WHAT IS A WIMBA STIFLE ORTHOSIS?

WIMBA Stifle Orthosis, also known as a knee brace, is a supportive device that is applied externally on a stifle joint to provide stability, support recovery and reduce pain. It is recommended for dogs with partial or complete Cranial Cruciate Ligament Ruptures (CrCLR).

MARKET NEED

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association in the United States, over 2.5-3 million TPLO and TTA knee surgeries are performed annually. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons estimates that the rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament is the most common knee surgery, accounting for approximately 60% of all knee surgeries in dogs. The National Canine Arthritis Foundation estimates that 1 in 5 dogs will experience some form of knee joint disease during their lifetime (1). It is estimated that more than 4-5 million knee operations are performed annually worldwide and in addition to that approximately 200 million dogs worldwide are affected by osteoarthritis.

MEDICAL INDICATIONS

  • CrCLR/CdCLR: Stabilisation of complete rupture of cranial/caudal/both cruciate ligaments.
  • CLpR: Stabilization of partial rupture of cruciate ligaments.
  • Injuries to collateral ligaments.
  • Meniscal injuries.
  • Patellar dislocation Grade 1 and low Grade 2.
  • Bone injuries within the knee joint.
  • Muscle injuries within the knee joint.
  • Postoperative and post-arthroscopy support for the knee joint.
  • Rehabilitation and recovery support.
  • Support for the knee joint in degenerative processes (Osteoarthritis).

After TPLO or TTA surgery, dogs face a significant risk (22%-54%) of ACL rupture in the opposite leg within 6 to 17 months. Stifle orthosis serves as a preventive solution (2).

Patients after TPLO surgery benefit from essential rehabilitation supported by knee braces, providing load, alignment, and rehabilitation support, as well as controlled range of motion for effective recovery.
